The Life and Times of Jason Sherman
My name is Jason Sherman. I was born in Los Angeles, California in 1974. I was adopted and grew up in a Jewish home with loving parents. Ruth and Corky Sherman would do their best to raise a son with Asperger's. There would be many schools that I would attend to help me control my behaviors and learn to live an independent life.
The reason for writing this book is to get the word out for all those struggling with Asperger's and how it can be a difficult journey with schools, therapists, and medications. Everything was going well until the bottom fell out. The Regional Center decided I did not need their services, which resulted in a huge lawsuit. Watching my father go through the difficult task of trying to be the "counselor" was very difficult, and he should not have been put into that position. This book will start with my birth and the trials that my parents and I went through. There was a time I would do something that would land me in jail that I realize now was a symptom of my being Autistic. Read about my journey, both legal and emotional, which will open your eyes to the strength of the Regional Center and how they are able to deny services.
It wasn't easy, and the road ahead would be filled with struggles. In my journey through childhood and into adolescence, I would be diagnosed with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. This new information would lead me down a path of specialized schools and therapy programs designed to help me cope with the world around me. Over time, I would learn to manage my differences and build skills to navigate life, but the challenges were far from over.
Through it all, I learned what it meant to survive. I learned the value of perseverance, the necessity of support, and the painful reality of betrayal. I learned that healing is not always linear and that my journey was far from conventional. This website is an invitation to explore my story — a story of trust, betrayal, survival, and, ultimately, triumph.
