My book, Jason: Trust, Betrayal, & Survival, is a deeply personal account of my life — a story that takes you through the highs and lows of my journey to adulthood. It's a narrative that combines personal reflection, raw emotion, and life lessons learned the hard way.
The story begins with my adoption in December 1974. While my adoptive parents provided a loving home, my developmental delays became apparent early on. Doctors predicted I would never speak and warned that my quality of life would be limited. Despite their bleak outlook, I defied expectations. I found my voice and my way through the world, even when society told me I couldn't.
As a child with Autism and Asperger's, life presented unique challenges. I struggled with social interactions, communication, and adapting to the expectations of others. I was enrolled in specialized schools and therapy programs, and for a while, Regional Center services provided the support I needed to become more independent. But as I began to make progress, something unexpected happened: the services I relied on were abruptly withdrawn. It was as though the system had deemed me "cured" without fully understanding the complexities of my condition.
Without the support I had come to depend on, I spiraled. I found myself in situations I couldn't handle, and the consequences of my actions led to a brief but life-changing stint in jail. This was the moment I hit rock bottom. But it was also the moment I began to understand that survival doesn't just mean surviving the world around you; it means learning to survive yourself.
In my book, I detail how I faced betrayal from those who promised to support me, how I fought against the odds to regain my independence, and how I eventually emerged stronger, wiser, and ready to face life on my own terms.
This book is not just a personal memoir — it's a guide for anyone who feels lost or overlooked. It's a story of resilience and hope for anyone who has struggled with finding their place in the world, and it's a testament to the power of perseverance and self-discovery.
